
Smoke Tree Ranch will be hosting a clinic with grand prix rider Joie Gatlin October 11-12. Gatlin is one of the leading competitors on the national show jumping circuit. She has represented the United States in World Cup competitions and has competed in the Olympic Trials. There are still spaces available for riders at all fence heights. Gilbert Youth Fishing Day will be from 8 a.m. to noon October 11 at Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch Lake, which is located at the southeast corner of Greenfield and Guadalupe. A valid urban fishing license is not needed for the event. Just check in that morning with volunteers before fishing. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is providing instruction, and will lend fishing gear and bait to the first 100 participants who do not have equipment of their own. The Phoenix Future Stars softball showcase will be October 11-12 with 18u Gold and 18u A divisions, limited to the first 36 teams. The entry fee is $460 and includes a five-game guarantee. The 2008 Border Madness girls’ ASA fastpitch tournament in Yuma will be November 8-9. Teams from Arizona and California will participate. All age divisions are welcome, with a four-game minimum. Hoops of Hope is an organization that collects donations from basketball shoot-a-thons around the United States for different fundraising goals.
