Kyle Huckaby fired a two-hitter Sunday evening to lead the Generals past the Gilbert Badgers 12-1 in the USSSA 14uAAA Spring Training Classic championship game at Espee Park in Chandler.

The Badgers were overmatched all game with Huckaby’s use of breaking pitches and pin-point location, said Generals coach Ken Huckaby.

“He was outstanding tonight,” coach Huckaby said. “He was so consistent with his location, and it wasn’t so much his use of the fastball but his breaking pitches that really shut [the Badgers] down. He was always around the zone, so they had to swing at everything.”

The Badgers didn’t get a batter past first base until the fourth inning, when they scored their only run. Leo Lopez reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Josh Patrick and scored on a wild pitch.

After that, Huckaby dominated. He retired seven of the next 10 batters and struck out the side in the fifth on just 13 pitches.

The Generals got on the board in the second inning. Tyler Kocher reached second base on an error, Henry Torres walked, and after an out, a wild pitch moved Kocher and Torres into scoring position. Adam Stump walked, and Dyan Hansen delivered an RBI single to center. After another out, Ryan Peep and Brady Weiss drew two consecutive walks that forced home two more runs and made it 3-0. Austin Filare’s single made it 4-0.

A fourth-inning RBI single by Stump made it 5-0. An RBI double by Weiss and a sacrifice fly by Filare in the fifth made it 7-0.

In the sixth, Hansen was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and moved to third on an error. Brady Hettinger plated him with a sharply-hit single to center. Casey Tucker ripped a two-run double, and Stump singled home Tucker with a scorching ground ball past the first baseman.

Huckaby made quick work of the Badgers in the bottom of the sixth inning. After striking out Lopez to start the inning, Patrick singled and Jake Martinez was hit by a pitch. Jase Pederson hit a line drive to the second baseman and Patrick was too slow to return to second base, becoming the second out in a game-ending double play. Huckaby pumped his fist as the final out was recorded, with it securing the two-hit complete game.

“The Badgers played a clean game,” coach Huckaby said, “and our hits just found holes. We don't have a lineup full of big boppers. The kids on this team defend the plate and put the ball in play.”
