The Scottsdale Stars beat the Irvine (CA) Rox 6-5 Sunday to claim the 14u AAA 2010 USSSA Spring Super NIT championship at Red Mountain Sports Complex in Mesa.
The Stars trailed in only one inning of the entire tournament, winning six straight, four by run rule.
The Stars had outstanding pitching the entire tournament, especially down the stretch. In the semifinal, Spencer Moran pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout. Tyler Plantier threw a complete game in the quarterfinals, giving up only one run. Jakob Goldfarb took the hill in the championship game and held the heavy hitting Rox to three earned runs.
“We brought the bats out just when we needed them,” said Stars coach Pete Fletcher.
In the title game, Joe Duran plated the first two runs in the first inning, driving a two-strike pitch into the left-center gap for a two-run double.
The Rox held a 3-2 lead in the fifth, however, when Preston Fletcher drilled a line drive to right field, scoring Spencer Moran, who was 3-for-3 in the game, with the tying run.
Goldfarb drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, which set up a run-scoring double by Cody Hartman that put the Stars up 5-3. Tyler Green doubled down the line in left to make it 6-3.
The Rox drew within a run at 6-5 and had the tying run on base when the Stars turned a double play and ended the threat.
Kyle Allen came in for the save and secured the championship. Alec Schlegelmich was 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
“Every player on this team had an equally important role in this championship,” Fletcher said. “It sounds cliché, but this really was a tremendous team effort.”
