Late-inning drama was in abundance Saturday afternoon in the 14u Majors championship of the USSSA Easter Classic baseball tournament at Big League Dreams in Gilbert.
The Peloteros battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning against the North Glendale Wolfpack on a grand slam by Ivan Torres, only to lose in the bottom half of the inning on a walk-off homer by Niko Ortega that gave the Wolfpack a 6-5 victory.
Ortega, pitching masterfully for 6 1/3 innings, walked three straight batters in the top of the seventh. He was relieved by Joey Colvert. Down to their final out after Colvert induced a groundout, Ivan Torres stepped to the plate and crushed a ball over the fence in left, a grand slam that tied the game 5-5. The Peloteros' dugout emptied to greet Torres as he crossed home plate.
The Peloteros' newfound enthusiasm was short-lived. Ortega came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh and hit his game-winning shot to left, just a feet away from where Torres' homer landed.
Ortega was the offensive star for the Wolfpack, going 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Colvert earned the victory.
The Peloteros got on the board first in the top of the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jayden Eggimann.
The Wolfpack scored three times over the next three innings. Jake Holmes and Ortega had RBI singles. Noah Kelly scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolfpack tacked on another run on an RBI single by Calvin Lebran that sizzled through the hole between shortstop and third base, scoring Marcus Medina. |
