The Muddogs survived a five-run, sixth inning rally to defeat the Athletics 7-6 Sunday in the USSA Spring Classic 14u Majors championship game at Victory Lane Sports Complex in Glendale.
The Muddogs scored all their runs in the first inning. Jaxxon Fagg and TJ Widner both hit two-run doubles. Garrett Rupp hit a two-run single.
With a seven-run lead coming out of the first, the Muddogs had taken the air out of the A’s bench and appeared to be in full control, allowing only one run in the fourth. That was until the sixth inning.
The Athletics began to chip away at the lead with three consecutive RBI doubles to make it 7-4. Still, even with one out, a miraculous comeback didn’t appear to be in the works.
Then Cody Gorman and Jason Mclaurin kept the momentum going with their big bats, each hitting RBI singles that made it 7-6. Heading into the seventh, the miraculous comeback was now becoming a reality.
The momentum shifted, however, on a big play with the glove. Ryan McCord helped turn a double play, all but ending the A’s hopes of a comeback. |
