The Peloteros defeated the AZ Prowlers 10-4 Sunday for the 14u Majors title in the USSSA Cinco de Mayo baseball tournament in windy conditions at Gene Autry Park in Mesa.

With the Peloteros nursing a 3-0 lead, the Prowlers mounted a comeback in the sixth. They loaded the bases on three walks. Rudy Karre Jr. poked a ball over second base for an RBI single. Alex Sepulveda followed with a deep drive to left that rolled to the wall for a three-RBI triple to stake the Prowlers to a 4-3 lead.

The Peloteros roared right back in the bottom half of the inning. After Jayden Eggiman walked leading off, Kevin Fowler delivered a triple to the gap in left-center. The throw from the outfield overshot third, scoring Fowler as the Peloteros seized the lead once again, 5-4.

The Peloteros would score five more times in the sixth inning. Tyler Kerpin had a three-RBI double, and Ivan Torres and Justin LaForce hit RBI singles.

Peloteros relief pitcher Kent Hasler kept the Prowlers at bay, throwing to pitch 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. For most of the game, Fowler was the dominant pitcher. He took a no hitter into the fifth and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings.

“We are a team of mostly 13-year-olds, so these players are just happy to be here and compete with a great team in a 14u tournament,” said Prowlers coach Rudy Karre Sr.

The Peloteros came alive at the plate to rally behind their starting pitcher, who hit a wall in the sixth, said Peloteros coach Tom Vetterl.

The game featured a bizarre play when Jayden Eggiman was at the plate in the fourth and was hit in the helmet on a throw to third by the catcher on an attempted steal. The ball rolled to backstop and the baserunner scored. Eggiman was not hurt.
