Pitcher David Alopeza and BBIG Black were rolling on all cylinders Monday en route to an 11-1 victory over the PBA Storm in the 18u final of the USSSA Memorial Day Classic NIT at Peoria Sports Complex.
Alopeza pitched a five-inning complete game for the Black, allowing one run on four hits. He also struck out five.
The righty held the Storm scoreless until Aaron Smith scored on a balk in the bottom of the fifth. Smith led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before scoring on the balk.
The Black offense showed patience and took advantage of wild pitching by the Storm, drawing six walks in the game. The team then jumped on pitches over the plate, collecting seven extra base hits.
Storm starter Blake Stein walked the bases loaded to start the game before Robert Gonzalez sent a 2-RBI double to left. Gonzalez moved to third when BBIG baserunner Alfonso Pacheco was thrown out at home on the play.
A batter later, Ruben Rivera gave the Black a 3-0 lead when he plated Gonzalez with a single to right.
After going up 7-0 with two runs in the each second and fourth innings, the Black put a run-rule victory within reach with a four -run fifth.
Pacheco started the rally off with a one-out double and scored two batters later on a double by Rivera. Following back -to-back RBI doubles by Allan Barraza and Alopeza, pinch-hitter Rodrigo Almeras finished the scoring when he skipped an RBI triple past the Storm centerfielder.
Barraza energized the BBIG lineup from the six hole, going 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Black scored two runs in the second on an RBI triple by Jake Luna and an RBI single by Nico Price. The team added two more runs in the fourth when Luna smacked a hard two-RBI single past third.
