Keith Zuniga had the support of his current teammates Sunday as he pitched a complete game to help the Angels Red beat the Arizona Firebirds 5-3 at Peoria Stadium for the 18u title the Four Corners baseball tournament. A future teammate was not so kind.
Konner Wade nailed Zuniga in the ankle with a line drive in the second inning.
“We’re going to be on the same team next year,” said Zuniga, who will play for the University of Arizona. “That happens in baseball. I was fine. It was just kind of numb.”
Doolittle’s liner bounced off the pitcher for a single and started a two-run rally that was the biggest hiccup of the day for Zuniga. He struck out six, and the Firebirds didn’t threaten from the second until the seventh.
“He kept them off balance,’’ Angels coach Kevin Henthorne said. “He did a great job. That’s a good hitting team.”
Firebirds coach Ron Forbes said his team was somewhat depleted from playing the high school coaches All-Star games over the weekend as well as going 5-1 in the tournament.
The Four Corners is a long hot weekend, especially for the teams that make the final.
“We have a lot of pitching depth,” said Henthorne, whose team won the Don Mattingly World Series (17u) last summer. “It was tested.”
Nathan Causey, who doesn’t normally pitch, threw three innings during the tournament.
“We had a lot of kids playing positions they don’t normally play,” Henthorne said. “The kids battled, and you have to like that.”
The Angels took the lead in the top of the second on a three-run double by Hunter Thompson. Causey started the rally with a one-out double. Adam Sonabend and Colton Thomson followed with singles, loading the bases. Thompson then hit his double.
The Firebirds had threatened in the first when Zach Davies doubled and Jake Peavyhouse walked, but Zuniga escaped. With one out in the second, Ward singled off Zuniga’s ankle. Tyler Doolittle and Cody Callahan singled, loading the bases. Trevor Allen hit a grounder to score Ward. A throwing error allowed Doolittle to score.
From there, Zuniga cruised until the final inning.
“I tend to get stronger as the game goes on,’’ he said.
Kyle Herrington homered over the right centerfield fence for the Angels in the fourth.
The Angels made it 5-2 in the fifth. Thompson singled, and Joey Rocha moved him over with a bunt. Kasey Coffman doubled to score Thompson.
With two outs in the seventh, Allen singled and scored on Jorge Flores’ double. Zuniga was able to get the next batter on a groundout. |
