The AZ Titans beat the Venom 7-3 Sunday to take the 14uAA championship of the USSSA Bring the Heat Classic at Big League Dreams.

Coming into the game, the Titans, who are a 13u team, were the first seed and played like they were. They benefited from some great pitching and some equally great hitting from Trevor Ponczak.

Ponczak, who pitched a complete game, spread 12 hits over six innings of work. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs.

Titans coach Jim Everett praised his pitcher’s work, noting that this was the first time Ponczak had pitched from a distance of 60 feet.

“He had to kind of feel it out as far as making his change-up throw for a strike and his curveball throw for a strike, but he has three good pitches and he was able to use all of them today,” Everett said.

Kyle Kercher went 3-for-3 for the Titans, scoring a run in the huge fourth inning.

Seven of those 12 hits Ponczak allowed came from Jozef Montes, who went 4-for-4, and Aaron Diggs, who went 3-for-4.

Tim Fabits, the coach for the Venom, which is also a 13u team, was happy with Montes’ day at the plate, saying that he “had the pitcher’s number.” He also raved about Diggs, calling him an “outstanding athlete.”
