No. 1 seeded Arizona State gave up eight runs in the second inning Tuesday, fell to South Carolina 11-4 and was eliminated from the College World Series.
For the second straight game, the Sun Devils vaunted starting pitching faltered. Former Desert Mountain star Merrill Kelly (10-3) gave up eight runs on 10 hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Jackie Bradley Jr. and Adrian Morales homered in the second inning for South Carolina as ASU bid adieu to historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. The Sun Devils won five titles there from 1965-1981. The College World Series is moving to a new park next season.
ASU (52-10) trailed 10-0 before scoring in the fifth on when Austin Barnes and Brophy graduate Drew Maggi drove in runs with singles.
Deven Marrero and Brophy graduate Matt Newman singled to plate runners in the eighth.
Marrero finished 3-for-4 with a double. |
