Coverage of every game Saturday in the one-day USSSA Pile on the Points Classic 13uAAA baseball tournament at Big League Dreams.

AZ Rage 6, Copperheads 4

The Rage won the championship game in their last at bat, the Rage’s 10th tournament win this season.

The pitchers for both teams were solid. David Rico went six innings for the Copperheads with eight strikeouts. Andrew Peterson of the Rage went six innings and had six strikeouts.

The Rage, down 4-3, rallied in the top of the seventh. With a runner on base, Preston Rohman tripled to left to tie the game. Peterson hit a line drive into center that plated Rohman with what proved to be the winning run. James Ciapa followed with a deep ball to right that appeared catchable but dropped in for another triple and an insurance run.

“When we’re down, these guys don’t go down,” said Rage coach Mike Camarena. “You just have a sense in the dugout when you look around at these guys that they know we’re not going to get beat.”

In addition to Rico’s strong performance on the mound, he and Cameron Amparano hit RBI doubles, but the Copperheads were their own worst enemy. Five of the six Rage runs followed an error by the Copperheads.

“The whole team had a good tournament overall and did exceptionally well,” said Copperheads coach Jeffery Arsola. “But we gave them that game.”

Rage 12, Sandlot Bulldogs 3

The Rage opened the tournament with a romp past Sandlot. Ciapa pitched a complete game and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Isaac Esperaza hit a home run in the third, and Rohman was 3-for-3.

For Sandlot, Travis Johnson hit an RBI double in the first and went 2-for-3. Kyle Huls and Alex Kern both had RBI singles.

Copperheads 10, Sandlot 5

Jacob Frithsen pitched six innings of two-hit ball for the Copperheads, striking out six.

The Copperheads committed no errors, and eight players had at least one RBI. Rico and Manny Aguirre both had two RBI. Jesse Sanchez, Tyler Johnson, Cole Davis, Marcos Ytuarte, Kenyon Kautz and Amparano finished the game with one RBI.

Both Kern and Aaron Makil had sacrifice RBI for Sandlot. Aaron Reyes hit a double in the seventh inning that plated two.

Copperheads 10, Rage 8

A six-run second helped the Copperheads gain an early lead over Rage.

Trevor Boggie started the big inning with a pop to left for an RBI-single. Johnson plated Boggie with a single. Amparano, who had an RBI single in the first, hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI double. Aguirre followed with a single for two more runs.

For the Rage, Joe Mucha and Ciapa each had two RBI and two doubles. Camarena hit a single and drove in two in the sixth.
