The Southern AZ Red Wings beat the AZ Elite 5-3 in the championship of the four-team tournament.
The Wings jumped out to a quick lead when AJ Saudate brought two runs home with a one-out double in the first inning. Saudate would later score, giving the Red wings a 3-0 lead early.
Starting pitcher Sati Santa Cruz pitched well for the Wings, only allowing a bunt single in three innings of work. The Red Wings had 9 strikeouts for the game.
The Red Wings scored two more runs in the third. Santa Cruz drove in two runs on a smoking double down the line in left field.
Wings coach Sati Santa Cruz Sr. said that he told his pitchers to focus on throwing fastballs and to trust the players on the field with them.
“(We wanted) to let them put it into play and let the defense go out there and make the plays,” the coach said.
The Elite came rushing back into the game in the sixth, scoring three quick runs. Mickey Ontiveros lead off the inning with a double and scored when Joel Miranda singled.
Carlos Tarraza went for 2-for-3 for the AZ Elite. Brandon McCann was perfect at the plate, getting a single and drawing two walks.
Elite 6, Los Rage 2
In pool play, the Elite beat the Los Rage behind Ontiveros’ three RBI. The Rage were unable to capitalize on two bases-loaded situations, as the Elite were able to turn double plays to end both threats.
Wings 12, Sandlot Bulldogs 0
The Wings beat Sandlot in a game that was called after the fourth inning by run rule.
Rage 2, Sandlot 0
The Rage salvaged a victory with a seven-inning win in pool play.
