The Apache Junction Prospectors dug themselves out of several holes Thursday and topped Arcadia in an 11-7 baseball shootout in Apache Junction.
Titans third baseman Gary Cornish started the game off with a bang, smacking a three-run homerun to centerfield. It was the first homer of Cornish’s varsity career.
The early lead wouldn't last, however, as Apache Junction put together a string of singles to tie the game.
With the game tied at 4 in the top of the fourth, Gary Berridge put Arcadia (2-4) back on top with a homer of his own.
Once again, the lead would not hold. The Prospectors (1-5) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, a rally highlighted by Mike Davalos’ steal of home.
Trailing 9-5 in the top of the sixth, the Titans showed patience at the plate and nearly staged a comeback. After Thomas Shellhardt started the inning with a single, JP Thurau walked, and Preston McClain reached on an error to load the bases. Eddie Lyon and Jake MacWilliam drew RBI walks to make it a 9-7 game before the Prospectors escaped the jam.
Arcadia returns home at 11 a.m. Saturday to face Bradshaw Mountain. The Titans will unveil a new scoreboard, part of the school’s renovation of the baseball field. |
