With a clutch, six-run seventh inning rally, the Arcadia Titans defeated the Coronado Dons 9-8 under the lights Tuesday night and secured a playoff berth.

Tim Janssen's walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the seventh gave the Titans (18-11, 9-5) the win over their rival and solidified the team’s playoff position. Arcadia will find out where it seeds after the rest of the teams in 4A-II finish their regular season schedules this week.

“The guys were really focused and locked in today,” said Arcadia head coach Ken Rudolph.

Trailing 8-3 going into the final inning, Janssen started off the rally with a leadoff walk off of Don reliever Austin Hansen and moved to second on an infield single by Andrew Naderer. Jake MacWilliam walked, loading the bases.

After an RBI single by Tommy Berridge, Thomas Schellhardt chased Hansen with a two-RBI single to right to make it an 8-6 game.

With Schellhardt on first and pinch-runner Colton Sanchez on second, Mike Scannell drew a walk off of Alex Buya, loading the bases and put the tying run in scoring position.

Brendan Satran then came through in the clutch for Arcadia when he chopped a short infield single to third that scored Sanchez. Satran’s speed to first forced an errant throw from third baseman Houston Edwards that scored Schellhardt. Scannell moved to third and Satran advanced to second on the play. Garth Miracle then entered the game as a pinch runner for Scannell.

After an intentional walk to Max Schuman, Gary Cornish nearly won the game when he lifted a deep fly ball to right. However, Miracle failed to score on the play when he left from third early and had to return to tag up.

Despite the shift in momentum, Janssen came through for the Titans when he laced an RBI single to the outfield to end the game and launch his team into the playoffs.

“The baseball gods were in our favor today,” said Rudolph.

In addition to the clutch hitting in the seventh, the Titans received an excellent pitching performance from Naderer. After pitching a gem at Williams Field only five days ago, the sophomore lefty came through for Arcadia after the Dons put up seven runs on starter Schellhardt in three-plus innings.

Naderer allowed only one run on four hits in four innings to pick up the win. He also struck out three.

At the plate, Naderer went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Satran finished the day 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

The Dons (20-9, 9-5) looked poised for victory early, going up 4-0 in the top of the second inning. With one out, Buya started it all off with a single and moved to second on a pass ball. T.J. Kittle then plated Buya with a single to put Coronado up 1-0.

After a walk to Edwards and a sac-bunt by Wyatt Richardson, Shane Harney hit a two-RBI single to right-center and moved to second when the ball bounced off of Satran’s glove in the outfield. Harney scored a batter later when Maxx Simmons reached on an error by third baseman Preston McClain.

The Titans got one run back in the bottom of the third when McClain walked and scored a few batters later on Naderer’s RBI double.

Coronado added two more runs on Adam Dickerson’s two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Tim Stempkowski.

Stempkowski also pitched well for the Dons, allowing only one run in three innings before being relieved following the Dons big offensive inning.

Arcadia put itself within striking distance in the fourth inning when Scannell singled and Satran doubled with one out. Both players then scored on consecutive wild pitches to shorten the Coronado lead to 7-3.

Arcadia will play a yet to be determined opponent in the first round of the 4A-II state playoffs Saturday.

“At this point, everything is just gravy for us,” said Rudolph.
