The Torrez brothers provided much of the spark Friday night as Arizona State rallied from five runs down to remain unbeaten in baseball.

ASU, ranked No.2 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, edged Auburn 9-8 at Packard Stadium when Riccio Torrez drove in the winning run with a groundout in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The victory ran ASU’s record to 13-0 under first-year coach Tim Esmay. Jim Brock opened his career as ASU coach in 1972 with a 12-0 start.

Auburn scored five unearned runs to take a 7-2 lead in the fifth. Riccio Torrez got thing started with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. His former Brophy teammate Matt Newman doubled in a run, and Zach Wilson drove in two more runs with a single. Deven Marrero tied the game with a run-scoring double, and Raoul Torrez drew a bases-loaded walk to give ASU an 8-7 lead.

Auburn wasn’t done. Pinch hitter Kevin Patterson homered with two out the eighth to tie the game 8-8.

In the bottom of the eighth, former Brophy star Drew Maggi reached on an error. Raoul Torrez beat out a bunt for an infield single. Buckeye graduate Kole Calhoun bunted both runners. Riccio grounded out to second to score Maggi.

Former Desert Ridge star Jake Barrett earned his first victory, pitching an inning of relief.
