Arizona State will go a week between baseball games — and the Sun Devils could use some rest after two marathon victories in the Super Regional against Arkansas. The Sun Devils (52-8) are scheduled to open the CWS against Clemson (43-23) at 4 p.m. Sunday Arizona time.
Brophy alumnus Drew Maggi sent ASU on the path to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., Sunday night when he hit a homer to left-center in the top of the 12th to give ASU a 7-5 victory. The night before, ASU prevailed in the bottom of the 12th when Deven Marrero hit a walk-off single to give the Devils a 7-6 victory in the best-of-three opener.
The Devils and Tigers will square off in the second game of the day Sunday, following the South Carolina/Oklahoma game. Arizona State will be the home team against Clemson.
The Devils will be making their 22nd trip to Omaha. It will be the last CWS played at Rosenblatt Stadium.
In both Super Regional games, ASU took an early lead and Arkansas came back. On Saturday night, things looked bleak for the Devils. They were down to their last strike and knew they had to face Arkansas ace Drew Smyly in the second game.
Former Sandra Day O’ Connor star Zach MacPhee came through with what might be the biggest hit of the Sun Devils' season. It went about 40 feet, a high bouncer to third-base side of the mound. MacPhee busted down the line. Andrew Alpin, who was on third, came in to score. MacPhee went head-first into the bag and beat the throw, tying the game 6-6.
In the bottom of the 12th, Cole Calhoun led off with a walk, his school record-tying fifth of the game. He later scored on Marrero’s single up the middle.
Smyly turned out to be little trouble for the Devils. Zach Wilson hit two homers, and Brophy alumnus Riccio Torrez entended his hitting streak to 25 games with a two-run homer as ASU raced out to a 4-0 lead.
ASU chased Smyly in the bottom of the fifth (Arkansas was the designated home team for Game 2). His replacement, freshman D.J Baxendale, turned out to be more of a problem, allowing just one run in 6 1/3 innings.
Arkansas chipped away but still trailed 5-4 with two out and no one on in the bottom of the ninth. This time it was Arkansas’ turn to tie it after being down to the last strike. Brett Eibner ripped a slider from ASU closer Jordan Swaggerty over the fence in left and tied the game.
In the top of the 12th, Marrero led off with a single. Brophy grad Raoul Torrez bunted him to second. After a line out, Maggi hit a shot to give ASU a two-run lead.
Swaggerty, working his fourth inning, put the Razorbacks down 1-2-3. |
