Ramon Miranda struck out seven and threw a complete game Saturday night at the Surprise Recreation Complex as Somerton beat RAMMS 10-4 for the 11u Cal Ripken state baseball championship.

“We wanted the ball for the final inning,’’ Ccoach Juan Cortez said.

Somerton will advance to the regional in Utah.

“We went to the regional last year — about half the payers from last year — so we have a good idea what to expect,’’ Cortez said.

Somerton broke open the game in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead. Danny Orazco led off with a single. One out later, Gonzalo Badilla doubled to drive in Orazco. Sam Mattice singled to score Badilla. Juan Cortez followed with a two-run inside-the-park homer.

“Hats off to them,” RAMMS coach Mark Dania said. “They’re a great hitting team.

“I’m proud of our players and their effort,” Dania said. “They exceeded our expectations.”

Somerton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Cortez opened with a single. He went to second on Miranda’s groundout and stole third. Philip Gregio singled to make it 1-0. He stole second and third and scored on a single by Orozco.

RAMMS, which needed to win twice Saturday to win the title in the double-elimination tournament, came back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Luke Diana was hit by a pitch, Trey Dillard walked and Zack Zelman singled, loading the bases with no out.

Gray Olson scored Diana with a groundout. But Miranda was able to get out of the inning with no further damage.

Somerton added three runs in the third. Badilla singled and Mattice walked, Cortez followed with an RBI double and Miranda plated two runners with a single.

In danger of being run-ruled, RAMMS fought back, scoring a run in the bottom of the third when Dillard singled and scored on Chris Blessington’s triple.

RAMMS added two more in the fifth when Dillard singled, Zelman doubled and Blessington singled.

Somerton scored its final run in the sixth. Ricardo Urias doubled and came home on Juan Cortez’s single.
