Sahid Valenzuela was a star at the plate and on the mound Friday night — and the tournament — to help Somerton to a 12-2 victory over Dynamite and the Cal Ripken 12u/60 state title.

Valenzuela had two doubles and a triple and combined with three other pitchers to strike out 11 in a five-inning game at the Surprise Recreation Complex.

“He’s is our MVP for the tournament,’’ coach Bernardino Jacuinde said.

Somerton, which had several players from last year’s 11u championship team, will advance to the regional in Utah.

Somerton, which is outside Yuma, overpowered its rivals from the Valley in the tournament.

“It’s the kids,’’ Jacuinde said. “It’s all the kids. They practice hard. They play hard.”

Javier Urquidez singled, homered and drove in five runs for Somerton. Tomas Jacuinde walked and doubled. Ricardo Montoya tripled and homered. Saul Marquez doubled and had a sacrifice fly.

Marquez, Joel Jauvequi, Valenzuela and Julio Villareal pitched the victory.

Dalton Elliott pitched strong middle relief for Dynamite and drove in a run.

Damon Miller and Clayton Smith hit successive doubles in the fourth to produce Dynamite’s first run. Tyler Benner doubled in the fifth and scored on Drew Davis’ grounder.
