The Angels scout organization and All-Star Baseball Academy left the Surprise Recreation Complex with a state championship Saturday night at the other’s expense.

Angels Red beat ASBA 16 8-2 for the Don Mattingly (17u) championship. ASBA 15 won the Mickey Mantle (16u) title with a 15-2 victory over Angels Black.

Angles Red will advance to the Don Mattingly World Series in Albuquerque. The Angels organization won the event last season. There was also a possibility ASBA 16 would receive a bid to Albuquerque.

ASBA 15 advanced to the Mickey Mantle regional in West Covina, Calif.

Angels Red took command in the third inning when they broke a scorelss tie with a six-run rally. Paul Panaccione, Nathan Bannister, John Havird and Ryan Benedict had key singles in the rally.

DJ Carr took a no-hitter into the fifth. ASBA’s Chase Wagner broke it up with an RBI double. Ryan Penaflor doubled and Benedict tripled as the Angels added a couple late runs.

“This is a special, special group,’’ coach Tony Snow said.

In the Mantle championship, Wyatt Hull pitched a complete game as ASBA finished the tournament unbeaten and avoided an “if” game.

Bryan Eberson hit a three run homer. PJ Garcia was 3-for-4,  Kenny Slattery 2-for-4 and Christian Camacho 3-for-5.

“The main thing for us isn’t winning, but that we continue to improve,’’ coach Ronaldo Romero said.
