Travis Flores hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning Saturday night as the Angels Red overcame a five-run deficit and a rain storm to win the Connie Mack State (18u) baseball title.

Flores’ blow lifted the Angels to an 8-7 victory over All-Star Baseball Academy at the Surprise Recreation Complex and avoided an “if “game.

The Angels team won the Don Mattingly World Series last year, and the victory game them a chance to follow it up. They qualified for the regional in Seattle but declined to go because of costs.

Arizona had two berths. The Arizona Firebirds will accept one and the Dodgers scout team will likely take the other.

Cory LeBrun went 4-for-4, and the Sean McCarty went 2-for-3 to pace ASBA, which jumped out to an early 5-0 lead.

“This team has never quit,’’ Angels coach Kevin Henthorne said. “We just kept chipping away the lead.”

Nathaniel Causey hit a two-homer to start the comeback.

“We just didn’t have enough pitching at the end,’’ ASBA coach Jeff Spring said. “We just ran out of arms.”

ASBA led 7-5 in the top of the seventh. The Angels’ DJ Peterson was on second. ASBA intentionally walked Kasey Coffman.

Flores hit the first pitch to left field. The ball carried over the fence to put the Angels in the lead and made a winner out of Dillon Freeman.

“He made them pay,’’ Henthorne said of Flores.
