When Hank Bergquist hit a walk-off two homer Sunday, no one on the Arizona Revolution realized how far that would carry them. As it turned out, all the way to Puerto Rico for the Pee Reese (12u) World Series.
Bergquist’s blast at the Surprise Recreation Complex gave the Revolution a 15-6 run-rule victory over the Chandler Rangers in the Pee Wee Reese state tournament. Both teams made it to the championship round of the double-elimination tournament
The Rangers won the first game Sunday morning 7-5. That set up a final game scheduled for Monday. But Chandler public schools begin classes on Monday, and the Rangers decided another trip to Surprise was out of the question, electing to forfeit.
Revolution coach Tad Reasons was explaining the strong games the Revolution received from Parker McKinsey and Quincy Wesbrook.
“Well, it’s not how I would have wanted to win it,’’ Reason said. “But we’ll take it.”
Willie Mays
Halos 3 coach Enrique Cotto is heading home. His team beat Halos 1 13-1 Sunday to win the Willie Mays (10u) state title and a berth to World Series in Puerto Rico.
“I want to show my players the kind of baseball we play in my home,’’ he said.
Luis Arriola went four innings and gave up no earned runs in the championship game.
“All out pitcher did a great job,’’ Cotto said.
Nolan Lovett and Boyd Van der Kooi each went 3-for-3 in the title game. Matty Brown was 2-for-2 with a HBP, and Jake Tidd went 2-for-3 as the Halos 3 pounded out 17 hits. |
