The Arizona Firebirds, who finished fourth in the Connie Mack state tournament, made the most of a second chance and open Connie Mack World Series play Friday night.
The Firebirds, who received a bid to the regional after other teams declined, open play against the East Cobb Yankee from Georgia at 5:15 p.m. (New Mexico time) in Farmington.
The Firebirds have a history of making the most of a second chance. In 2006, the Firebirds finished second in the regional but went to the World Series because the regional champion was disqualified. The Arizona team won the World Series.
