Former Arizona State standout and current New York Yankee Colin Curtis made the most of an odd situation on Wednesday against the Angels.
Curtis came to the plate with an 0-2 count after starting left fielder Brett Gardner was ejected. Curtis promptly smacked the first homer of his big league career. The three-run homerun gave the Yankees a 10-5 lead in an eventual 10-6 win.
Curtis is batting .259 this season in 27 at-bats for the Yankees as a reserve outfielder.
Curtis isn’t the only Sun Devil making noise in his first major league season. Mets first baseman Ike Davis and Reds starter Mike Leake are both putting up exceptional rookie numbers.
Davis gave the Mets a much-needed offensive jolt early in the season and has solidified the first base position for the club. He is batting .259 with 13 homes and 45 RBI.
Leake is 7-1 with a 3.45 ERA for a Cincinnati team that is in contention for the NL Central title.
ATH for Tuesday:
Two of Arizona’s top softball players received national recognition today during the Under Armour All-Star Softball Classic at the Disney Complex in Orlando.
Kayla Bonstrom and Dallas Escobedo were selected to participate in the Classic, an all-star game that brings together 30 of the most talented softball players from around the country.
This is the first Classic selection for Bonstrom, an all-around talent from Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson. Bonstrom also laces up for the club Hotshots-Householder.
Bonstrom led Canyon Del Oro in hitting last year with nine home runs and currently anchors the Hotshots lineup from the number-three hole. She hits, throws and runs at a high level and has a work ethic that never quits, said Hotshots head coach Keith Householder.
“You can’t beat the kid,” said Householder. “She really is a coach’s dream.
“She is one of the best players in the state, and everyone on the team loves her.”
The 2010 Classic is nothing new for Escobedo. She started last year’s game for Team Battle, which ended up winning the event 2-0 on a combined no-hitter thanks to a strong start by the St. Mary’s hurler.
Escobedo, a 2010 St. Mary’s graduate, led the Knights to a state semifinal berth last year and is set to suit up for Arizona State next season.
The Under Armour All-Star Softball Classic will air on ESPN-U on tape delay on Saturday.
