In a weekend filled with softball, the Arizona State Sun Devils traveled to the Rio Vista Sports Complex in Peoria on Saturday to face the Phoenix College Bears in the highlight exhibition of the ASA Collegiate Challenge.
The Devils got off to a slow start, but ended up defeating the Bears 11-0 on the strength of a four-run fourth inning and a seven-run fifth.
The Arizona State pitching staff tossed a combined no-hitter. St. Mary’s grad Dallas Escobedo pitched three innings of dominant relief, striking out six and walking one.
Sun Devil slugger Nikole Afusia provided the big hit for Arizona State when she nailed cleared the fence in left for a grand slam in the fifth. Amber Freemen knocked in two with a homer to right later in the decisive inning.
Former Mesa Highland star Taylor Haro had a big game for the Devils. After slugging a deep out to center in her first at-bat, Haro hit a two-run triple in the fourth.
Basha alum Sam Parlich also turned in a good effort for Arizona State. She walked, stole a base and scored on Haro’s triple. Parlich also played solid defense at second base.
While the Phoenix offense had a hard time adjusting to the Devils potent pitching, the team did have a bright spot on defense. Centerfielder Erika Cade played saved several runs with big grabs. The Desert Vista grad showed off great range and made plays lunging to her left and right. |
