USSSA baseball calls off the weekend tournament because of soggy conditions. That and more for Friday, brought to you by Arcadia Tavern.

1. It’s wet outside: You probably noticed.

USSA baseball called off its tournament because of wet grounds. On the Triple Crown Sports softball site, honcho Bobby Pena asks coaches – and only coaches and only one per team – to contact him after 4 p.m. Friday.

The Shoot for the Stars soccer tournament at Reach 11, hosted by CCV Stars, was rained out. The club plans to hold a penalty kick tournament Sunday afternoon for the U9-U14 divisions at its facility, 7007 W. Happy Valley Road in Peoria. Uncertainty surrounds the U7 and U8 divisions.

2. It was wet last weekend too: The USTA is still trying to finish last weekend’s Phoenix Junior Championships. Matches will rescheduled over the coming weeks.

3. Too wet even for fans: The annual Arizona State softball Meet, Greet and Select-A-Seat event and free clinic scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed, ASU reported in a release. No rescheduled date has been selected but will be released immediately, the school reported.

The List for Thursday

1. Nixon's the one: Mike Nixon, a graduate of Sunnyslope High School and a linebacker on the Arizona State University football team, is the 2010 recipient of a postgraduate scholarship presented annually by the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Chapter executive director Dan Manucci announced this week.

Nixon, 40 other Scholar-Athletes, coaches, referees, chapter leaders and a distinguished Arizonan will be honored at the Chapter's annual Scholarship Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Scottsdale Plaza, 7200 North Scottsdale Road.

Nixon began his ASU career in 2006 after playing minor league baseball for four years. He played in all 50 games over the last four years, starting 31.  Nixon made 253 tackles, 25 tackles for loss (minus 93 yards). He had 5.5 sacks, eight interceptions, forced six forced fumbles and recovered two fumbles in his career. He was a three-time First Team Academic All-Pac-10 and First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII honoree.  He was a Wuerffel Trophy Finalist and was a Lott Trophy Quarterfinalist.

Strong charge: George Cunningham of Litchfield Park shot an impressive 68 at Superstition Mountain on the second day to finish in a for third in the boys 14-19 division of the Desert Junior Golf Tour event last weekend. Cunningham had opened with a 77. His 145 total tied him with Garrett Moss of Gilbert. Alberto Sanchez of Noglaes won wiht a 143 total. Conner Chrtisoff on Wayzata, Minn. was second with a 144.

The List for Wednesday.

1. The rest of the story: Cave Creek’s Cassie Miller, who won the 14-15 girls NFL punt, pass and kick competition, had a busy weekend, alert reader Matt Kleifield writes:

“Cassie is also an outstanding soccer goalkeeper and during the same weekend was representing Arizona as a member of the Arizona 95 Girls Olympic Development Program Region IV Tournament team, which was then competing in the Region IV ODP Championship Tournament held at Reach 11 this past weekend. She had to hustle from her Saturday game to San Diego to compete Sunday and hustle back to play soccer games this past Monday morning and evening. There were some outstanding games played by boys and girls teams in the 96, 95, 94 and 93 age groups with teams representing the ODP programs from Arizona, Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Hawaii.”

Thanks, Matt.

2. Rounding into shape: Saguaro used the TCS MLK Dream Classic a sort of spring training. The Sabercats split their varsity prospects into two teams, which played six and seven games each.

“We had a chance to compete and face some live pitching,’’ said Dallas Strankman, who coached the Sabercats Black team to the 18u championship.

Back in the day, before all these club tournaments, it would take a team about a month to get that kind of game experience under its belt.

3. Traveling team: I asked 520 Elite coach Rick Dorame if he planned to play Connie Mack this summer with his team of top prospects. He said the plan is to travel around the country and represent Tucson in various elite tournaments.

The List for Tuesday: Stars of the weekend.

1. Not everyone associated with the Cardinals had a bad weekend. Cassie Miller of Cave Creek, representing our local grid team, won the 14-15 year old girls national title in the Punt Pass and Kick competition.

2. Michala Erikson of the Arizona Hotshots hit a walk-off homer in the 16u/18u championship  game of ASA Kickoff Classic.

3.  Marc Gavrey, catcher for 520 Elite, picked off three runners in the 18u wood bat championship game of Triple Crown Sports MLK Dream Classic.

The List from Sunday, Jan. 17

1. Shoes for Hatians: Soles4Souls (www.giveshoes.org) and Sport Chalet have joined forces to bring shoes to victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Sport Chalet will help support Soles4Souls’ commitment to donate more than 250,000 pairs of shoes to affected areas. Through Jan. 31, customers at Sport Chalet stores will have the opportunity to drop off a gently worn pair of shoes. All donations will directly support relief efforts.

Soles4Souls has partnered with Operation Compassion, a charity that mobilizes support for victims of natural disasters around the world, to transport and distribute the aid. Thirty containers of supplies, including work boots, rain boots, children’s athletic shoes and clothing items, are already en route to Haiti.

“As we struggle to comprehend the magnitude of this disaster, we cannot forget how important basic necessities – such as shoes – will be in the ongoing rescue and rebuilding efforts,” said Wayne Elsey, founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “We deeply appreciate the support of Sport Chalet and their customers in helping us provide shoes to survivors and volunteers as they work in horrific conditions.”

2. Team we’ll be watching: 520 Elite is playing this weekend at the TCS MLK baseball tournament and has landed some well-regarded prospects.

The 16U team includes Forest Chapman, Ryan Penaflor, Hunter Miller, Benny Garcia, Carlo Tacchia and Fernando Careaga.

The 18U team includes Jacob Hunter, Harrison Graham, Marc Gavre, Reid Hunter, Jack Hale, Trevor Cohen, Joseph Serrano, Preston Jamison,  Pen Nakazato and Alec Beyersdorf.

3. In and out: Defending 5A-II football champion Chaparral may be getting some more help. Or a headache. Devonte Neal, a stud wide receiver at Cesar Chavez, transferred to Chaparral, the Arizona Republic reported last week.

As they say on those TV informercials, wait there’s more.

Chavez went on AIA probation and missed the playoffs last season. The AIA is looking into Chavez for another allegation about recruiting. The parent of the player involved reportedly told the AIA that Neal’s father, Luke, was involved in recruitment. Chavez coach Jim Rattay and Luke Neal have denied the charge, the Republic reported. Chaparral athletic director Corey Newland told the paper that Devonte Neal hasn’t been cleared to play sports.

The List from Friday, Jan 15.

1. High draft pick: Chivas USA of Major League Soccer picked Blair Gavin, a midfielder out of the University of Akron and former Horizon High School and Sereno star. Gavin decided to go pro following his junior season when he hekped Akron to the NCAA men's soccer final.

"He's an excellent ball-winner, he has great vision, he reads the game well," Chivas coach Martín Vásquez said. "We're very, very happy with our pick."

Gavin will be close to home — Chivas plays its home games at Home Depot Center in Carson, near Los Angeles.

2. Spy master: Rayburn Hesse, former spy turned softball writer, underwent cataract surgery this week and will be out of commission for short time. Hesse runs Spysoftball.com, which is must reading for anyone interested in college softball or top-level club softball. Hesse deals with softball mostly — but anything else that pops into his head from his career to his takes on the TSA latest security measures. It's a great read.

3.  Winner: Cassidy Sanchez of Phoenix shot a 6-over 78 last weekend at Encanto Golf Course to win the New Year opening tournament of the LPGA/USGA season. J.C. Harvison of Mesa was second, two shots back.

4. Titans on top: Arcadia is on top of the 4A-II girls soccer rankings following an impressive 3-1 win over Notre Dame, the defending state champion.
