Elected officials believe someone else should have their heads examined. That and more for Friday, brought to you by Arcadia Tavern.
1. Head on: Lawmakers are taking interest in sports-related head injuries in the wake of new concerns surrounding concussions in pro football. Washington state was out ahead of the trend. Athletes under 18 in the Evergreen State who have concussions can't play again until they are cleared in writing by a medical professional. California and Pennsylvania have considering similar bills.
2. Recruit on: This should be a terrible recruiting season for USC football. Pete Carroll bolted for Seattle. NCAA sanctions lurk around the corner. And the Trojans hired Lane Kiffen from Tennessee in a ham-handed manner that drew criticism from everywhere but Heritage Hall. But five days before signing day, Rivals.com has USC eighth in recruiting rankings. ASU is 33rd and UA is 38th. The web site has the Sun Devils seventh and UA eighth among Pac-10 schools.
3. Marquis name: The Wildcats nabbed the only in-state recruit who made much noise nationally. Marquis Flowers of Millennium announced he was going to UA after the Army All-American Game. Among the other UA commitments from in-state are Kyle Benson, a linebacker from Corona del Sol, and Chase Gorham, a linebacker from Chaparral.
4. The Devils: ASU’s top in-state commitment is Josh Fulton, a tight end from St. Mary’s. The Devils landed versatile Ramon Abreu from Marcos de Niza. I thought Abreu was the most exciting player in the state at the high school level the past two seasons.
The List for Thursday:
1. Copper State Four: ASA came out with a list of 50 to watch for its collegiate softball player of the year. Four athletes who played high school ball in Arizona are on the list: UA’s Stacie Chambers, from Cactus, Stanford’s Ashley Hansen, from Corona del Sol, Nevada’s Katie Holverson, from Cactus and Kentucky’s Molly Johnson, from Sabino. In addition, Krista Donnenwirth of Arizona State and Brittany Lastrapes of Arizona are on the list.
2. Where’s Kenzie?: Arizona’s much-touted freshman hurler Kenzie Fowler didn’t make the list because ASA doesn’t put freshman on the watch list. However, freshman are eligible for the award. The 25 finalists will be announced in April. Something tells me, she might be one of them.
3. Top 10: UA and ASU are both in the top 10 for preseason softball rankings from ESPN and NFCA. ESPN has UA fourth and ASU seventh. NFCA has ASU fifth and UA sixth. Defending NCAA champion Washington tops both polls.
4. Baseball rankings: ASU is 14th in the Baseball America preseason poll, which came out this week. Collegiate Baseball, which came out with its rankings in December, placed the Sun Devils at No. 5. Texas tops both set of rankings.
The List for Wednesday:
1. When will this bad weather end: We don’t usually make much of the weather because … well, this is Arizona. There’s not much to talk about. It’s hot in the summer. Generally, it is pleasant the rest of the year. But wet ground played havoc with outdoors sports last weekend. Well, the forecast this weekend is for highs in the upper 60s, some clouds and no rain. So if it doesn’t get too wet today, we may be able to get some games in.
2. The coach can play: Sunnyslope High School girls volleyball coach Amber LeTarte is back on the court for the first time in a decade, playing with the women’s team Raw. A former player at Grand Canyon University, LeTarte said she never gets to play in practices. “I’m always running the drill,’’ she said.
3. The coach can wrestle: Mevlin Douglas, coach of the Sunkist Kids Academy team, was one of the best college and freestyle wrestlers the United States has produced. Here’s a memorable match from this college days. Click here.
Three stars of the weekend for Tuesday.
1. Danny Romero of Eloy won the 142-pound championship at the State Junior High Wrestling Championship and accumulated the most points for Outstanding Wrestler.
2. Amanda Hamm of Maricopa scored 22 points in a girls basketball win over Arcadia.
3. Ramon Marrieta of Safford Middle School pulled off an upset to win 200 pound title of the Arizona State Junior High Wrestling Championships and helped Safford to the school team title.
The List for Saturday.
1. Cave in: Part of the roof at Jay Lively ice rink in Flagstaff collapsed overnight Friday. No one was injured. Heavy snowfall accumulation has led to the collapse of several roofs at businesses in Flagstaff. The city ordered homes and businesses with flat or nearly flat roofs to clear them of snow immediately.
Losing the rink is bound to play havoc with the Sonoran Youth Hockey League schedule.

2. Congrats: Damien Anderson, the former Cardinals running back and a Chandler resident, was inducted into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
Anderson is the host of a weekly webcast on Voice America and runs a social networking site Planetgridiron.com. Anderson holds the Northwestern career rushing record with 4,485 yards. He finished fifth in the Heisman voting in 2000.
3. Major success: The Peloteros of Chandler currently lead the USSSA baseball 14u Majors points rankings. Not bad for a team that was started out as a AA team. “We’ve been through the wars,” coach Tom Vetterl said a couple weeks ago. “The main things is to keep trying to get better.”
