Nitpicking umpires throw Arizona ace off her game. That and more for Friday, brought to you by the Arcadia Tavern.

1. Illegal pitches: She had her arm wrapped, but her problems were with her feet. At least the umpires at the Women’s College World Series saw it that way. Arizona star pitcher Kenzie Fowler threw 110 pitches Thursday night against Tennessee. Eight of them were called illegal, which results in a ball to the batter at the plate and allows runners, if there are any, to advance a base. The issue was having both her feet in the air during her delivery (sometimes known as crow-hopping).

2. Vols rip: Fowler seemed to completely flustered by the calls. She walked eight as the Vols won in five innings. The Arizona Daily Star reported that the Wildcats only kept track of illegal pitches with runners on base. Fowlers had six of those during the entire season. Fowler told the Star after the game she never had been called for an illegal pitch because she became airborne. That is until Thursday night.

3. Why now? Did Fowler change her motion? Why call it now and not before? Why call it for the first time after five pitches (and a 3-2 count) and not on the first pitch? Those were questions Arizona coach Mike Candrea was asking after the game.

4. No offense: The Wildcats did little help themselves in the game, collecting only three hits. Shortstop K'Lee Arredondo committed an error that allowed three runs.

5. Up next: Arizona plays Washington, which includes Folwer’s former Desert Thunder teammate Jenna Clifton, on Saturday morning in an elimination game.

The Liust for Thursday:

1. Wildcat back: CDO and Desert Thunder product Kenzie Fowler is expected back in the circle Thursday when the Wildcats open the Women’s College World Series at 4 p.m. Arizona time. The game will be televised by ESPN2. Fowler was hit in the arm with a line drive the first inning of Arizona’s 10-2 victory in the Super Regional and had to leave the game.

2. Fowler, Boyd first team: Fowler and former Hostshots and Horizon star Katlyn Boyd, now at ASU, were NFCA Division I All-American first team selections. Arizona outfielder Brittany Lastrapes also made the first team.

3. Second team: Arizona catcher and Cactus grad Stacie Chambers and Arizona shortstop and McClintock graduate K’Lee Arredondo made the second team.

4. Quote: Arizona hasn’t won an NCAA title since way back in 2007. That constitutes a drought for Arizona. Arredondo addressed the issue at media day: “The sophomores and the juniors don't know what it's like to win a game at the World Series. They haven't won one yet. Sarah (Akamine) and I know what it's like to win, we want to win. The sophomores and juniors want to win, the freshmen want to win. Everyone wants to come here and do our best to win every game we play. I know everyone has a different mindset because everyone is sick of losing.”

The List for Wednesday.

1. Key to happiness: My car key fell off my key ring at Reach 11 on Monday, and after an unsuccessful search, I went off to cover the State Cup U19 finals. I don’t have another copy. So when the games were over, I was looking at spending a warm, expensive afternoon trying to get someone to re-key my car. I had called my wife for help, and she drove me from the field to my car. When we pulled up, we noticed someone had stuck the key in the window. Whoever it was, thank you.

2. Thank you dear: Thanks to Mrs. Ledger List for driving up to Reach 11 to provide moral support.

3. Combining forces: SC del Sol had both finalists in the State U18 girls final last year. This year, Ally Maxwell and Gary Saunders combined their squads for the U19 State Cup. It worked. SC del Sol won, though not without a tough final from the Gilbert Arsenal.

4. Phoenix del Sol: The Phoenix del Sol, in its first season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League, opens this weekend. The home opener is 7 p.m. Saturday at Reach 11 against the Arizona Rush. Admission is free.

Three stars of the weekend:

1. Blake Milton scored four goals in the U19 boys final as Sereno 91 White took the State Cup in soccer.

2. Ashley Hayes scored the winning goal in overtime in the U19 girls final as SC del Sol 91 won the State Cup.

3. Sydney Gaffin threw a shutout in the final as the Li’l Saints won the 18u title at the ASA McGonigle Memorial Day Classic.
