The List for Wednesday:

1. A title for the taking: Going into last weekend, there were no teams entered in the 10u division of the ASA state championships. This age group seems to have all but died out in club softball in our state. It’s too bad. For a youngster with the right blend of talent, confidence and maturity, 10u provides valuable experience and good times.

2. Your name here: Like other city teams who have won Cal Ripken state championships, the Surprise Rangers 12u/ 70 team will be honored at the Surprise Recreation Campus youth fields with a plaque listing all their names.

“We still haven’t put up a plaque for a regional championship team yet,’’ recreation director Paul Frie told the boys.

He’s has room for that, too.

3. AABC tournaments: Surprise will host the Sandy Koufax state tournament July 22-25. AABC is also holding Pee Wee Reese (12u) and Willis Mays (10u) state tournaments. The winners of those two event get all-expenses paid trips to Puerto Rico for the World Series. If you are interested in entering, contact Paul Frie by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

4. Level best: I went to introduce myself to the Surprise Rangers coach, and it was someone I had already met: John Hemsley, the baseball coach at Dysart. You seldom see a high school coach working with kids that age in any sport, although you’d think that on occasion a high school coach would look for a chance to develop youngsters at an earlier age or coach their own kids.

Three stars of the week:

1. Erwin Jones Jr. of the Phoenix Bobcats won the young men’s (18u) decathlon at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships, totaling 5768 points.

2. Jordan Carter of Vail won the girls championship flight of the Antigua/Milt Coggins Arizona Junior Stroke Play golf tournament.

3. Jeremy DeMarr led the Surprise Rangers to victory with his pitching and hitting in the Cal Ripken 12u/70 state championship series.
