Sarah Pauly heats up. That and more for Friday, brought to you by the Arcadia Tavern.
1. Getting hot: Former Desert Vista and Lil Saints star Sarah Pauly has heated up, going 3-0 in her last three games with a 0.69 ERA for the USSSA Pride of National Pro Fastpitch. Pauly is 7-2 this season.
2. Chosen the Best: Former sometime McDowell Mountain Yankee Bryce Harper became just the second junior college player to win the Golden Spikes Award, which USA Baseball gives to the outstanding amateur.
Alex Fernandez is the only other junior college player to win it. Fernandez, from Miami Dade Community College, won in 1990. All other winners have been NCAA Division I players.
Harper hit .443 over 66 games and with 31 home runs for College of Southern Nevada. That’s with wood bats.
3. First winner: Apollo High School and Arizona State star Bob Horner was the first Golden Spikes winner, back in 1978. Like Harper, Horner was a No.1 draft pick.
4. New champ: North Scottsdale needed to win two games on the same night in the championship round to knock off Mountain View in the District 6 Little League Junior division championship. Mountain View had won the previous three titles and last season won the Junior World Series in Michigan.
The List for Thursday:
Chris Moon, 20, was a former player with the Tucson Wildcats club team and a Tucson High star. He died from injuries sustained from a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan.
Moon was recruited by the University of Arizona to play baseball but left school before playing a game.

4. Ian Kinsler of Canyon del Oro played second base, walked and went 0-for-1. He hit the fly ball that Diamondback Chris Young ran down in center for the final out of the game.
