The Jr. Midget South East Valley Ravens successfully defended their home turf Saturday against the Chandler Heat, winning 35-12 at Pecos Park in Phoenix.

The Heat (2-5) scored first, but the Ravens (3-4) scored two touchdowns each in the second, third and fourth quarters to seal the win.

Ryan Krell scored on the Heat’s fourth play from scrimmage in the game’s opening drive, a 31-yard sweep up the right that put the Ravens up 6-0 early in the first. After forcing a four-and-out series on defense, the Ravens were unable to capitalize and were forced to punt.

The Heat took advantage, marching 42 yards in eight plays, capped by a 20-yard TD pass from Dale Black to Ralph Roman, evening the score at 6-6 with just under eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. Defensive honors on the drive went to Hayden Durkiewicz who completed an open-field tackle for an 8-yard loss.

The Ravens scored again with 2:30 remaining in the half when a 17-yard flea-flicker completion from Garvin Alston to Xavier Balderrama set up a 3-yard run for Black. A successful extra-point attempt gave the Ravens a 14-6 lead.

The Heat re-took possession and mounted a promising drive of their own including a 26-yard completion from Bryce Toburen to Emilio Salazar, but a holding penalty prevented Chandler from cutting the Ravens lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Roman intercepted a pass deep in Heat territory, setting up a 30-yard toss to Balderrama that led to a 1-yard QB sneak for the Ravens’ third touchdown. The Ravens added another score with under a minute remaining on a 40-yard TD completion to a wide open Aaron Ramirez.

The Heat mounted a 10-play, 50-yard drive ending in a 10-yard touchdown run from Austin Belsher, who smashed through a clump of defenders to shorten the Ravens lead 28-12.

The game’s final score came on a 6-yard run from Davis Mettner late in the fourth quarter. Jacob Tripp then stripped the ball on the ensuing kickoff, and the Ravens took a knee at the Heat 16 to wind down the clock.
