Scottsdale (6-0) defeated Fountain Hills (2-5) 37-15 on the road Saturday to put the finishing touches on a perfect season and retain first place in the Northwest C division.

The Firebirds produced a balanced attack. Kurt Shughart reeled off a 55-yard run to start the game. Kodey Scott also put up some big runs. Running back Brandon Matonis and quarterback Dalton Sneed ran for scores.

The Scottsdale offense also excelled through the air. Quarterback Robby Kleified hit Christian Skeptarius for a 55-yard score. Sneed also threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Drew LaSalle.

Firebird defensive backs Brett Bishop, Connor Graham and Luke Meyer led the defensive attack and shut down the Falcon passing game.

“I think we’re gelling on offense just at the right time and, we could still use some work on defense,” said Firebird coach Scott Ruby. “We are also just getting all of our players back from injury and illness in time for the playoffs."

Jr. Midget Bolts 6, Wolfpack 0

Buckeye (1-5) came out on top in a close game to come away with its first win of the season, stopping Desert Highlands (0-7) on the road.

The Bolts scored the game’s lone touchdown when quarterback Daniel Talamontes found Gabe Celaya for a passing score.

The Buckeye defense put in an excellent performance to secure the win. Defenders Josh Cramer, Kevin Clay and Chris Slaughter all intercepted passes.

“They (the Bolts) dug deep, and it was a hard fought game by both teams," said Bolts coach Ken Clay.

Jr. Midget Cobras 32, Warhawks 16

Levi Higgins ran for 150 yards and scored two touchdowns, and South East Valley (4-2) held onto second place in the Southeast A division with a solid win over Chandler (2-4).

Quarterback Zack Wade threw for two touchdowns. Tyler Wong and Michael Ryan each caught a scoring pass.

The Cobras defense also did an excellent job containing the Warhawks offensive attack. Corner back Riley Rhodes intercepted one pass and came up in run support. Defensive end Brady Price also fought hard to contain the run.

“I am very proud of the kids, they played a great game heading into the playoffs,” said Cobra coach Jack Nolan.

Warhawks running back AJ McClendon scored both of his team's touchdowns on the ground from the wildcat formation.

Justin Jan also played well for the Hawks. He had two interceptions and connected with quarterback Matt Asta on several nice passing plays.

Jr. Midget Dawgs 18, Stars 13

Gilbert (6-1) picked up a close victory over Phoenix (2-5) at Central High and finished the season in second place in the Southeast B division.

Dawgs running back Justin Brown led the offense with a 60-yard touchdown run. Colin Kirchardt also ran for a score from 5 yards out. Gilbert receiver Daniel Mahan pulled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from Mason Moran.

The Stars fought hard in defeat and kept the game close until the end. Phoenix was driving the ball down the field in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter but had the drive derailed by a penalty, said coach Waylon Bridge.

Phoenix quarterback Daniel Bridge-Gadd led the offense with touchdown passes to Dee Miller and Tyler Hallman.

“It was a hard fought game,” said coach Bridge. “The kids really played to their potential.”

Jr. Midget Cowboys 25, Lumberjacks 0

In an all-Chandler affair, the Cowboys defense and special-team units powered the team to a huge victory over the Lumberjacks at Tumbleweed Park.

With the win, the Cowboys won the Southeast A division and preserved a perfect record. The team set out to accomplish both of those goals at the outset of the season, said coach Greg Sanchez.

“Our kids are showing a lot of heart, and they are having a tremendous season,” said Sanchez. “They are all friends now, and the camaraderie on the team is amazing.”

The Cowboys special teamers manufactured two long punt returns for touchdowns. Zane Serrano returned a punt for 50 yards and a score. Doc O'Connor took a punt back for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboy defense put up another two scores. Joe Storm took an interception back 25 yards for a touchdown. Cameron Cruz also picked off a pass and returned it 75 yards for six points.

Jr. Midget Bulldogs 38, Buffaloes 0

South East Valley (7-0) remained perfect on the season and captured the Southeast B division title with a win over Mesa (1-5) at Pecos Park.

Bulldog Ben Troglia played an excellent game as a fill-in receiver. He caught one touchdown pass from quarterback Dalton Thorpe.

Tristin Griffith, Blake Monty and Tyree Shivers all scored touchdowns in the game.

Bulldog defensive end Bridger Barker played an excellent game and sacked the quarterback on numerous occasions. Fellow end Hunter Olson also picked up two sacks in the game.

The Bulldog PAT team also turned in a great effort, converting four of five extra points.

Midget Stars 38, Broncos 7

Phoenix (4-2) held onto second place in the division with a big win over Poston Butte (0-6) at Central High.

Running back Jayquon Herron led the Stars with multiple rushing touchdowns. Fellow back Thomas McQuarter reeled off a 70-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Alex Brizuela also scored a touchdown on the ground. Receiver Eric Gelley caught a touchdown pass from Brizuela.

Stars middle linebacker Salesi Koloamatangi led the defensive attack with seven tackles. He was on fire the entire game, said Stars coach Tyrone Harris.
