The Chandler Wolves beat the Tucson Raiders 46-12 Saturday in the Jr. Pee Wee division Arizona AYF Super Bowl I at Chaparral High School.
The Wolves scored their first touchdown with a 29-yard run by Stacey Boyd II within three minutes of the first quarter, which made the score 6-0.
The Raiders had trouble moving the ball downfield on their first and second possessions, which became a problem throughout the game.
The Wolves scored again on Cito Hemphill-Toledo’s 55-yard run. The offense had not been moving the ball this fast in previous weeks, according to Wolves coach Ken Lacivita.
“The offense had not clicked for the past three weeks,” Lacivita said. “We had some good practices this week, and we tried to be more positive with the kids.”
The Raiders answered back with a 53-yard touchdown run by Davajay Hinton. The Wolves then turned around and scored on a 40-yard run by TJ Green on the first play of their possession, and an extra point kick made by Connor Nason made the score 20-6.
With three minutes left in the second quarter, David Montes ran the ball in the end zone for the Raiders. But less than 30 seconds later, Hemphill-Toledo ran the ball 67 yards to make the score 28-12.
The Wolves scored three more times in the game. The Raiders came close with a six-minute possession, but were held on the Wolves 1-yard line.
The Wolves are headed to Florida for the Under Armour American Youth Football National Championships December 4-11. Lacivita said the team is going to prep for the national games by “eating a lot of turkey.”
“We had a great season, and we went undefeated,” Lacivita said. “I’m looking forward to go back there and get the trophy we missed last year.”
Pumas 22, Dolphins 16
Chandler defeated Oro Valley for the Cadet division title.
The Dolphins managed to put up a fight even though they were without starting middle linebacker Kyle Nicholai.
“Not having him in the first quarter really hurt us,” Dolphins coach Tom Nager said. “But Gabe Velencia stepped up in that position and did a great job.”
The Pumas jumped out early, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter and making both extra-point kicks by Ty Siffermann for a 16-0 lead. Amil Meriweather scored on a 26-yard run on the opening drive for the Pumas, and JD McLaughlin ran for a 41-yard touchdown.
“We were ready to go even though we had never seen (the Dolphins) before,” Pumas coach Keith Burke said.
The Dolphins caught an early break in the beginning of the second quarter when Langston Hampton intercepted a pass. Oro Valley did not manage to score on that drive, however, as Justin Brown picked off a pass.
The Dolphins scored on their next possession. A 15-yard run by Pallanes and a 24-yard run by Nick Brahler sety up a short TD run by Brahler. Seth Nager’s extra point kick was good, making the score 16-8 at the end of the first half.
In the fourth quarter, the Pumas scored their last touchdown when Siffermann connected with Max Johansen for a 52-yard touchdown pass.
The Dolphins followed the touchdown by running back-to-back trick plays but only gained 6 yards.
“We got caught on the trick plays, but we got on them the second time around,” Burke said. “We had to adjust in the second half because of it.”
The Dolphins scored from a 26-yard pass by Pallanes to Brahler with 2:24 remaining in the game. Seth Nager’s PAT kick made the score 22-16.
Oro Valley recovered a fumble but couldn’t manage to squeak out another score, as Siffermann picked off a pass.
“We really are a second-half team,” Nager said. “We were able to stop them on some of their big drives and big plays.”
The Pumas advance to the AYF nationals.
Firebirds 27, Rams 14
Scottsdale beat Tucson for the Midget championship.
Running back Cody Scott led Scottsdale with two rushing touchdowns. Kurt Shughart also ran for a score for the Birds.
Running back Keevile Brown also ran well for the Firebirds and made big plays on defense from the middle linebacker position.
The Firebirds closed out the game in the fourth quarter on an interception by Sam Zillwood. With a 27-14 lead, Zillwood ended the Rams’ final drive with the pick and allowed the Firebird offense to run out the clock.
Scottsdale recovered an onside kick to start the game and opened up with a 62-yard scoring drive, punctuated by a short rushing score by Shughart.
The Rams responded with a score on their first play of the next drive.
Scott then gave Scottsdale another score following a 55-yard drive.
The Firebird defense buckled down and stifled a potent Ram offense that had outscored its last two opponents 94-12.
Firebird kicker Connor Graham gave the team a cushion with a 17-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter.
Scott added another rushing touchdown in the third quarter to widen the lead.
“We played our best game in the last game of the season, and that is encouraging,” said Firebird coach Scott Ruby. “And beyond football, this team is really just a fine group of men.”
Chargers 61, Wolfpack 7

The Wolfpack recorded its lone score when running back DJ Stanek capped a long drive with a 1-yard TD run.
Wolfpack tight end Mason Eldridge played well in the big game, pulling in several passes for long gains. |
