Chandler's Wolves came within inches of winning their first-round Jr. Pee Wee game Sunday at the AYF National Championships in Orlando before falling 12-6 in overtime to the Buffalo Wolverines.

The Wolves rallied from a 6-0 deficit with a 3-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run by Stacey Boyd, whose second-effort at the goal line capped a seven-play, 78-yard drive to tie the game 6-6. Boyd carried three times for 32 yards on the drive.

The extra-point kick attempt failed, however, when the Wolves fumbled the snap – a harbinger of things to come.

An interception and 53-yard return to the Buffalo 20 by Cito Hemphill-Toledo with 4:22 remaining in the game put the Wolves in position to continue their undefeated season and advance to the championship round of the tournament.

Boyd carried for 10 yards on second down, putting the ball at the Buffalo 6 at the 3:18 mark. Three plays lost 3 yards, however, and Chandler trotted out their field-goal team for a shot at a potential game-winning kick.

The snap was low again, but the ball made it, precariously, to the tee. The kick was dead-on but fell just inches short of clearing the crossbar.

The Wolverines, a physical team who started the game dominating both sides of the line before Chandler matched their play in the second half, ran four plays into the line, running off the final 1:28 and accepting a shot at overtime after dodging a bullet with the seemingly certain field goal.

They won the toss and decided to play defense first. AYF's overtime format is similar to the NCAA's, except teams start at the 10 instead of the 25.

Chandler managed just two plays before turning the ball over on an interception. It then took the New Yorkers just two plays to punch the ball into the end zone, earning a hard-fought win and dropping the disappointed Wolves into the losers' bracket.

It was the second straight year Chandler advanced to Florida with an undefeated record but fell in the first round. The Wolves now will play for a shot at third place.
