Scottsdale's Firebirds stormed into the finals of the AYF Midget National Championship on Wednesday, cutting apart the Santa Monica Vikings 38-0.

The Birds were unstoppable on offense, putting up 38 against a team that had given up just six points all season. They did it with a near-perfect air attack that stunned the previously unbeaten Vikings.
With starting quarterback Sean Brophy knocked out of the tournament in the first round with a concussion, Sean Roberton stepped in and put on a dazzling display in his first start. He completed nine passes in 15 attempts (with three dropped throws) for 201 yards and four touchdowns, all in basically three quarters after the Birds hit 32 points and the game went to a running clock by AYF rules.
Roberton also was sacked just once, rolling to the left and right in a mobile offense that the Vikings could not stop. The Birds scored on five of their seven offensive possessions.
“The coaching staff put in those roll-out plays while watching film at 4 .m.,” coach Matt Frazier said.
That was just six hours before game time.
“We wanted to give (Roberton) some time to throw,” Frazier said.
Scottsdale's final score came on a 58-yard interception return by Cules Rose with 5:50 left in the game, capping a smothering defensive performance. The Firebirds continually blew up rushing plays in the backfield. Tyler Price recovered a fumble. And the Vikings completed just five of 13 passes for 21 yards, gaining a paltry 51 yards in total offense.
The win lifts the unbeaten Birds into Friday's title game against Buffalo, which shocked perennial power Naperville (Illinois) 36-8 in the other semifinal. |
