The Phoenicians overcame a slow start marred by penalties to roll over the New Englanders. A fast and furious defense, led by hard-hitting Zac Archer, gave up just 3 net yards of total offense.
The defense even got in on the scoring when Archer, who spent most of the game in the Massachusetts backfield, caused a fumble which was returned for a touchdown by Daniel Stanek.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ryan Velez capped a seven-play, 23-yard drive with a 1-yard run with 2:45 left in the first half. Stanek scored just 1:24 later on his fumble return for a 12-0 lead.
Bryce Perkins hit Jackson Loney for a 1-yard TD with just 19 seconds in the half. A successful conversion pass from holder Joe Storm to Velez made it 19-0 at intermission.
It took just three plays on their first second-half possession for Phoenix to make it 25-0. Perkins hit Loney again, this time for 49 yards.
Justin Brown competed scoring with a 3-yard TD run with 2:45 left in the game. Phoenix went 21 yards in six plays.
In a total team effort, Jr. Midget players Chris Williams, Christian Sanchez and Doc O'Connor stood out along with Archer, Braden Kartchner and Devin Raposa. Kartchner, Raposa and Archer, in particular, blew up several plays in the Massachusetts backfield.
The championship will be a re-match between Phoenix and Chicago. Chicago won last year. |
