The Scottsdale Firebirds earned a CAYFL Midget Division championship berth Saturday with a dominating 30-8 win over the Southeast Valley Wolverines at Chaparral High School.

The Wolverines looked as though they might give the Firebirds a run for their money early on, but the Firebirds proved to be far too strong.

On their first drive of the game, the Wolverines went three and out and were forced to punt.  But the Wolverines got a new set of downs when the Firebird returner muffed the punt, giving the Wolverines the ball on the Firebird 35 yard line.

The Wolverines rushed the ball down the throats of the Firebirds all the way to a first and goal at the Firebirds 7-yard line.  However, the Firebirds defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Wolverine rushing attack on four straight plays.

After one quarter of play, the score remained tied at zero and both teams appeared evenly matched.

The Firebirds finally scored following a very short Wolverine punt from their own 1-yard line. Will Edwards rushed 26 yards on two carries and scored the first touchdown of the game for the Firebirds.
