The Scottsdale Firebirds Red dominated the Gilbert Dawgs Red 32-14 in a Jr. PeeWee semifinal Saturday afternoon at Chaparral High School.
The Firebirds scored on the game's first offensive play, then recovered a Gilbert fumble. Quarterback Chance Ikei's 23-yard pass to Brody Azbill set up a 27-yarder to Gianni Brackins. Azbill's conversion kick made it 16-0.
Malique Sharp worked his way through the Dawgs’ defense for a 44-yard touchdown run. Azbill kicked the extra point, making the score to 24-0.
Three turnovers by both teams slowed the touchdown streak of the Firebirds until the last play before halftime. Brackins scored on a long interception return for the Firebirds, making it 32-0 at halftime.
On their first possession of the second half, the Dawgs gained four first downs, and receiver Max Fine scored on a 3-yard pass to cut the gap to 32-6.
On the Dawgs’ next possession, Jason Pena caught a 31-yard touchdown pass, and the Gilbert team converted the two-pointer, cutting the Firebirds’ lead to 32-14. |
