The Scottsdale Firebirds defeated the SEV Jr. Devils 30-0 Saturday at Chaparral High School to capture the 2009 CAYFL Jr. Midget championship.

The Firebirds came at the Jr. Devils with a full head of steam on both sides of the ball, collecting over 200 total yards, intercepting two passes and scooping up two fumbles.

Gary McKay led the charge for the Firebirds. He pulled down both interceptions, returned a kick 78 yards for a touchdown, rushed for a score and passed for a touchdown.

The Firebirds took control of the game early and never let go.  Following McKay’s 1-yard touchdown run on the team’s first drive of the game, the Firebirds put up two more scores in the first half thanks to some impressive passing plays.

After wide receiver Malcolm Thomas burned the Devil coverage, quarterback Brad Nordstrom hit the speedster with nothing but the open field in front of him for a 78-yard score.

The Firebirds finished the first half scoring with a bit of trickery.  With 9 seconds on the clock, Nordstrom took the snap and quickly tossed the ball to McKay, who then hit a wide open Christian Kirk for the score.

The Jr. Devil offense moved the ball well at points.  Despite moving into Firebird territory on six occasions, McKay’s first interception in the end zone and similar big plays ended any hopes for the Jr. Devils.

Quarterback Wesley Sutton led the Devil offense with 64 total yards.  Defensive back Anthony Abadessa led the defense. He made several big tackles and had an interception.
