After the Desert Highlands Wolfpack completed a comeback, the Tucson Falcons showed a comeback of their own.Cameron Denson scored on a 6-yard run with just under a minute left Saturday night at Tucson High School as the Falcons won 26-22 to take the AYF All-America state title.
“What a way for us to finish,’’ Falcons coach John William said. “We’re 12-0.This is a great way to go out.”
The Falcons won’t play another game. The Wolfpack (8-3) is heading to a tournament in Las Vegas over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Joe Kuhlmann scored on a 30-yard run to give the Wolfpack a 22-20 lead in the fourth quarter. The Falcons had led by as many as 12.
Then Kuhlmann recovered a fumble. The Wolpack could possibly run out the clock, but Desert Highland gave the ball up on downs near midfield. The Falcons marched down the field behind the running of Denson and Jay Williams and scored the game-winner.
“They’re a good team, well-coached,’’ Wolfpack caoch Ben Laird said of the Falcons.
Kuhlmann gave the Wolfpack an early lead, scoring on a 39-yard run. Isaiah Birkel’s kick made it 8-0.
The Falcons scored the next three touchdowns and led 20-8 at the half.
Devon Paloimino hit Birkel with 38-yard touchdown pass, and Birkel’s kick cut the gap to 20-16.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, facing a fourth down, the Falcons tired a reverse play. Marshall Bergstrom smelled out the play and hit the player trying to hand off and the intended recipient at the same time, knocking both to the ground. That gave the Wolfpack the ball on downs and led to the go-ahead score. |
