Arcadia ran its way to a dominant 56-9 victory over rival Coronado Friday night in the Titans’ first region game of the season.

The Titans scored on their first four drives of the game, highlighted by a big run that put the team up 28-0 midway through the second quarter.

Arcadia quarterback Cole Richardson connected with running back Bradley Tefft for 14 yards to start the drive. Tefft then drove the Titans into Don territory when he reeled off a 29-yard run. Fellow running back Ryan Fochtman broke away from the Don defense for a 43-yard touchdown run a play later.

Fochtman played well and contributed to an Arcadia running game that amassed 350 yards on the ground and scored five touchdowns. The junior back ran four times for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

The Dons offense responded to the long run with its only score of the game. The drive started at the Don 23, and quarterback Alex Buya quickly put Coronado in Arcadia territory when he hit receiver Seth Jaekel with a 35-yard pass.

A few plays later, Buya put up six with a 39-yard run. He finished the game with 93 yards rushing and one touchdown on 15 carries.

Outside of Buya’s long scoring run, the Arcadia defense shut down Coronado. The Dons were 2-for-9 on third down attempts and accumulated less than 200 yards of total offense.

The Titans pass rush, led by lineman Jack Olson, pressured Buya all game and forced a 4-for-11 passing performance. Olson collected two sacks, and fellow lineman Philip Kern dropped the quarterback once.

Linebacker Landen Berry also played a big role in the game, collecting several tackles on defense and special teams.

The Arcadia defense also put points on the board early in the third quarter.

On Coronado’s second drive of the half, Kern popped the ball out of Buya’s hands on the Coronado 25, and linebacker Alex Bolton recovered the ball for a score.

The Arcadia offense got off to a quick start at the beginning of the game, driving 65-yards for a score in just over five minutes following the opening kickoff. Tefft finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown score.

Tefft found the end zone again on the Titans next drive when he made several defenders miss on his way to a 35-yard touchdown run.

“He’s elusive and he’s fast," said Arcadia coach Jim Ellison. “He’s got a lot of stuff packed into a small package.”

The senior back led the Arcadia rushing attack with 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He also returned a punt for 33 yards at the end of the first quarter to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Fochtman.

Despite receiving excellent performances from Tefft and Fochtman, a third running back also stood out for the Arcadia offense.

Grinder Sosaia Maafu busted through the Dons defensive line and softened up the middle for his teammates. He reeled off runs of 19 and 30 yards. He finished the game with six carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

“That's the beauty of the Wing-T,” said Ellison. “It gives several backs the opportunity to succeed.”

The success of the Titans rushing attack allowed Ellison to take some pressure off of first-year quarterback Cole Richardson. After throwing on the first three plays of the game, Arcadia heaved the ball only six more times all game.

After struggling with accuracy early on, Richardson found receiver Cody Neal-Purkiss for a 30-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. He completed five of nine passes for 69 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The victory gives the Titans a region win and plenty of momentum for the upcoming weeks, but Arcadia isn’t planning to rest on its laurels, said Ellison.

“We’ll enjoy the win, but we’re not living off of this,” said Ellison. “Tomorrow we start planning for Higley.”
