Hamilton High School’s top quarterback was off at a showcase event this weekend, but his stand-in was a standout as the Huskies won the Surprise Passing League Tournament.

Kyran Poe saw his first action of the summer and led Hamilton, the defedning 5A-I state champion, to the top spot in the 26-team tournament, beating Millennium 29-7 in the final Saturday night at the Surprise Recreation Campus.

Dysart beat Agua Fria 20-18 in the consolation championship. Agua Fria was seeded 26th after pool play.

Passing league is seven-on-seven touch football played on a shortened field. There are no interior linemen. Points are scored for touchdowns and interceptions. Passes have to be thrown within four seconds of the snap. All tournament games were 35 minutes.

Hamilton quarterback Travis Dean went an to EA Sports Elite 11 showcase for quarterbacks. Poe, who had been having shoulder troubles, had played as an H-back throughout the summer.

“We have three quarterbacks,’’ coach Steve Belles said. “We’re strong at that position.”

In the championship game, Millennium quarterback Mike Massey, who also played cornerback all day, led the Tigers to a touchdown on the game’s opening drive.

“They had the momentum,’’ Belles said.

Poe responded by throwing a touchdown pass to Steve Hansen on the first play. From there, the Huskies defense was able to keep Millennium at bay.

“The way this works, if you make a couple stops you should win,’’ Belles said. “The defense really stepped up.”

Belles had praise for the receiving corps, led by Hansen and Zack Parrish.

Millennium was thin, and coach Christian Mays played most players on offense and defense and used a sophomore-heavy lineup.

“One of the things you want to work on (in passing league) is team unity and to see how they handle adversity,’’ Mays said. “They stepped up. They were warriors today.”
