Arizona State University scored on the opening kickoff Saturday night and never looked back. Now -- at last -- it’s time for the Sun Devils to look ahead to Georgia.

Omar Bolden got things started, taking the kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and sparking ASU to a 38-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe before an announced crowd of 43,780 at Sun Devil Stadium.

"I saw a wide-open lane, and the credit goes to the 10 other players that were on the kickoff return team.,’’ Bolden told a representative of the athletic department. “They set up the blocks nicely, and I did the rest."

ASU ran its record to 2-0, but both wins have come at home against lightly regarded opponents. The Sun Devils travel to Georgia to take on the No. 23-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday.

Coach Dennis Erickson wanted to make sure his players didn’t look past Louisiana-Monroe (1-2), which many believed the Devils did before a loss to UNLV last season.

"That was a heart-wrenching loss, and we have talked about that the last two weeks,’’ he said. “We definitely did not want to fall into that trap, and we knew that Louisiana-Monroe is a good team that can give us hell. Tomorrow we will talk about Georgia."

ASU has had trouble scoring early – the Sun Devils accounted for only 22 first-quarter points all last season -- and Bolden’s return seemed to break the dam. On ASU’s next possession, Dimitri Nance ran 1-yard for a touchdown, and the Sun Devils led 14-0.

Warhawks quarterback Trey Revell hit Darrell McNeal with a 14-yard scoring pass to make it 14-7 in the second quarter. But ASU scored 10 more points before the half. Danny Sullivan hit former Moon Valley star Chris McGaha with a 9-yard pass for a touchdown, and Bobby Wenzig kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Sun Devils a 24-7 lead.

Sullivan, making just his second college start, completed 19 of 31 passes for 220 yards with no intereceptions. Nance finished with 17 rushes for 82 yards, and former Chaparral star Kyle Williams caught eight passes for 129 yards. McGaha finished with six catches for 48 yards.

Sunnyslope almunus Mike Nixon, the star of the season opener, had five solo tackles and an assisted tackle. Hamilton graduate Gerald Munns had two tackles and an assist. Corey Adams, a freshman from Saguaro, had one tackle.
