Despite a near record-setting night by Arizona State receiver Chris McGaha, the Sun Devils fell to the Oregon State Beavers 28-17 Saturday in their Pac-10 opener in Tempe.
Oregon State jumped to a big lead early, leading the Devils 21-3 only seven seconds into the second quarter thanks to running back Jacquizz Rodgers. Rodgers ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter and finished the game with 87 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Sean Canfield completed 18 of 30 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. James Rodgers caught 10 passes for 114 yards and a score.
Although the Sun Devil offense never found a rhythm, McGaha pulled in the second-most catches in a game in Arizona State history. The veteran receiver fell four catches short of the record 19 set by Ron Fair in 1989. McGaha finished the night with 15 catches for 165 yards.
Outside of his passes to McGaha, Sun Devil quarterback Danny Sullivan could not find any consistency. Sullivan and the Devils missed several big-play opportunities throughout the game due to overthrown passes. Sullivan threw one touchdown and one interception while going 32 for 58 for 338 yards.
On their final drive of the game, Sullivan managed to march his team 92 yards for a score that accounted for little more than a moral victory. The Sun Devils capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sullivan to Kyle Williams.
Arizona State safety Jarrell Holman tipped a long pass over the middle before pulling it down for an interception in the third quarter.
Trevor Hankins averaged 53.4 yards a punt for ASU. |
