The YMCA Division 1 basketball championship for 3rd/4th-graders went to the Huskies from Arcadia in a hard-fought win at US Airways Center.

Jaxx Davies made two free throws to tie the game and then hit a bucket in the final seconds to lead the Huskies to a 26-24 win over Ahwatukee YMCA. The Huskies rallied from eight points down to claim the title.

“It was a team effort all the way and has been all season, “ coach Chuck Nixon said. “Playing on the court where the Suns (play) made it a night to always remember.”

To get to the championship game, the Huskies beat two Scottsdale YMCA teams.

The team has been playing together since December through the YMCA Competitive Basketball League. Players include Davies, Caron Edwards, Ty Gruwell, Jared Martin, Bryce Nixon, Jack Spier, Kyle Spier and Clayton Wasson, all students at Hopi Elementary School, as well as Jake Inzalaco from Tesseract and Luke Verbalaitis from Mercury Mine Elementary School. Coach Nixon was assisted by Justin Spier.
