AZ Stars-Team Korver overcame a first-round loss to earn a spot in the sweet 16 championship bracket of the Adidas Super 64 basketball tournament in Las Vegas.
The Phoenix-based team was the only 16u team from Arizona to reach the sweet 16. There were 96 teams in the tournament, only five from Arizona. The AZ Magic also made it into the championship bracket.
The Stars had to rally from deficits in all but one game to earn the championship-bracket spot. The team is 30-11 in the club season.
They opened play with a 63-54 loss to Full Package Elite from Northbrook, IL. With their tallest players measuring 6-foot-6, the Stars then ran off four straight wins against bigger teams before being bumped from the tournament.
The Stars defeated the Northwest Prospects from Ridgefield, WA, 61-53; the New Mexico Force from Albuquerque 72-49; Basketball’s Finest Training from Los Angeles 63-59, and Minnesota Southside from Savage, MN, 63-61.
They were eliminated by the Colorado Hawks from Denver 75-60.
The Stars won the Desert Invitational in Chandler with a perfect 4-0 record.
They beat the Channing Frye Bulldogs of Phoenix 54-49; the AZ Rebels of Phoenix 61-38; the Central Coast (CA) Wildcats 63-45, and bagged the title with a 68-45 win over the AZ Rebels 15u of Phoenix.
