Arcadia took its first lead, 39-38, with five minutes left in the game, and their defense was able to hold Desert Edge until the end.

“For the second consecutive night, we won a game in the fourth quarter after being behind most of the game, and that shows the mental toughness and will to win that the girls have,” said Ives Machiz, Arcadia coach.

Shantelle Edwards was Desert Edge’s top scorer with 16 points. Edwards and Arlett Lozoya helped stake the Scorpions to a 24-17 halftime lead.

“At halftime, we decided to change our defense, and the girls really stepped up to the challenge,” Machiz said.

Arcadia’s Megan Gillespie hit a three-pointer to help the Titans take the lead. She finished with 19 points. Teammates Gianna Grumbein and Andrea Gomez scored multiple three-point shots to keep the game close against Desert Edge.

“I am very optimistic about the upcoming season,” Machiz said. “There are very good teams in our region, so nothing is going to be easy, but I expect us to make noise in State this February.”
