Elliott Repka scored the game-winner late early in the second period Sunday at Chandler Polar Ice as the Phoenix Polar Bears won the Western Hockey League’s Thorne Cup.

Repka, who was set up by Rick Wozniak, gave the Bears a 2-1 lead over the Boulder Bison with 15:59 left in the second period. Bears goalie Casey O'Connor made it stand up, finishing the game with 33 saves.

Phoenix won the series 2-1 for its second straight Thorne Cup.

It was the seventh time since 2002 that the Bears have won the Thorne Cup, which goes to the winner of the WSHL playoffs. The WSHL is a Junior A Tier III hockey league.

The Bears and the Bison qualified for the national championships later this month in New England.

Gaven Hohl gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, scoring on a power play late in the first period. Wozniak and Jake Boese set up the goal.

The Bison tied the game early in the second period on a goal by Steven Shaffroth.

The Polar Bears sent the series to a third game when Wozniak scored in overtime Saturday night for a 3-2 victory. Boese assisted on the goal

It was the Bears’ fourth overtime victory in three playoff series.

The Bison sent the game in overtime when Anthony Cullen scored a short-handed goal with one second left in regulation.

The Bears opened the scoring when John Marsters scored midway through the second period, assisted by Wozniak.

They made it 2-0 late in the period when Mike Dillon scored unassisted with both team down a man.

Chris Coyle scored midway through the third period for the Bison to make it 2-1.
