On the high school club lacrosse scene, Brophy is sort of the old dog, having won the past two Division I state titles. Corona del Sol is the young pup, playing in just its second season in Division I and fourth overall.

Brophy found itself in a dogfight Friday night in the first half of its semifinal matchup with the Aztecs before emerging with a 9-3 victory at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.

The Broncos will meet Chaparral for the Division I state title at 8 p.m. Saturday (5/16) at Chaparral.

“They’re a good team,’’ Brophy coach Beau Pich said of Corona.

He said the Brophy defense stepped up.

“They all played really well,’’ he said. “They had to pay well to hold a team to three goals.”

The game was tight throughout the first period. Brophy took a 1-0 lead when Nicholas Glielmi scored early in the period. Ben Jackson and Adam Fishman scored 37 seconds apart late in the period to make it 3-0.

Will Allen got Corona on the board early in the second period. Sam Travis and Andrew Blumenherst scored midway through the quarter to give Brophy a 5-1 lead.

Corona fought back. Will Allen and Casey Wagoner scored to make it 5-3, and Brophy had its hands fill going into halftime.

Brophy regained the momentum right after the opening faceoff, as Fishman scored six seconds into the half. Fishman and Blumenherst each scored one more time, and Jack Panzarella added a goal.

The defense, led by Noah Bucon, Sam Quinif and goaltender Pierce Bassett, made the goals stand up.

Corona coach Cliff Prausa said he was extremely proud of his team,

‘They won it. We didn’t lose it,’’ he said. “They’re a great team, and they have a great goaltender.”

For Prausa, it was an emotional evening. This was the first group of Corona players that had played four years of high school lacrosse, many coming out of the middle school program he helped start.
