The Xavier and Brophy swim teams opened the season Thursday and overpowered Corona Del Sol, taking first place in every event.

Xavier, the defending 5A girls state champion, took the top two spots in each event on the way to a 152-31 victory.

Sophomore Talie Anchustegui and star senior Haley Krakoski each won four events. Anchustegui swam the backstroke in the 200-meter medley relay as well as the 100 freestyle, 100  backstroke and 400 freestyle relay. Krakoski swam the freestyle in the 200 medley relay, the 50 freestyle, the 100 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.

Brophy, the defending 5A boys state champion, won 144-39. Two of the Broncos’ top seniors finished 4-for-4. Danny Hatfield won the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and was on the winning 200 medley relay (backstroke) and 200 freestyle relay teams. John Wojciechowski won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and was on the winning 200  freestyle relay and 200 medley relay (freestyle) teams.

Brophy junior Shane Essert suffered a neck injury after diving off the block and hitting the pool floor. The paramedics were called and Essert was taken to the hospital.
