Billy Pecor of Scottsdale started 2010 where he wanted to be – in the final of a major junior tennis tournament. Pecor, the 23rd seed, had several chances to break serve early in the 18u boys singles title match of the USTA Winter National Championships Friday morning before falling to Daniel Kosakowski of Downey, Calif., 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at Scottsdale Ranch Park.
“He had service games where he started out a little shaky,’’ Pecor said. “He was able to step it up when he needed to.”
Kosakowski faced double break point in his first service game, and triple break point in the second.
“I decided I just needed to trust my serve and not think too much,’’ said Kosakowski, the No. 2 seed.
After avoiding early trouble, Kosakowski cruised to win the last four games of the set. In the second set, both players stayed on serve.
Kosakowski took command in the tiebreak, winning the first three points. Pecor was able to cut it to 5-4 when Kosakowski netted a forehand. Kosoakowki won the next point, hitting a winner off a leaping back hand volley. He served an ace to win the match.
For both players, it was their best finish in one of the four majors.
“I wanted a trophy with a gold ball,’’ said Pecor, who missed significant playing time with injuries the past couple years. “Just had to settle for a silver this time.”
